The
Users Guide to Brain Functioning
The human brain is a creamy coloured, soft wrinkly object
which weighs about 1.3 kilograms and contains around 180
billion cells. It is the most fascinating area of the
body and our understanding of it functions has increased
tremendously over the last decade. This one day work shop
explores the anatomy and physiology of the brain, examining
what functions different structures within the brain are
responsible for and looks at how and why we produce thoughts
and emotions. Current research evidence is reviewed and
case studies are used to guide understanding.
The two hemispheres of the brain are connected and work
as one but can also function independently. Fascinating
research evidence relating to the hemisphere specialisation
is explored. The limbic region of the brain is responsible
for most basic human functioning from sexual appetitive
to anger control. This region of the brain is examined
in detail and the biological basis of emotions such as
fear and disgust are analysed. This knowledge is particularly
relevant to conditions such as phobias, anxiety disorders
and obsessional compulsive disorder (OCD). This one day
workshop is beneficial to all health professionals and
therapists as it provides a deeper understanding of the
mechanisms behind some of the most common issues presented
by clients in the therapeutic setting.
This is a non-examined programme and credits are awarded
for information acquired during the course that will contribute
to the Certificate in Brain Functioning being awarded.
Students will receive their certificate at the end of
the course. This one day workshop will be held at the
BST Foundations usual training venues. For booking forms
and dates, please contact the Foundation on 020 8946 1432
for further details.
