Understanding Mental Illness
Work Shop
Mental illness is a common and often misunderstood issue
in society. Having a broad understanding of the theories
of mental illness is beneficial to all health professionals
and therapists. This one day workshop is designed to allow
students to gain a good understanding of the causes, diagnosis
and treatment of common psychiatric conditions including
depression, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and addiction.
The biological basis of these conditions is explored as
well as the interaction with genetics and the social environment.
Treatment options and current research evidence are discussed.
The appropriateness of hypnotherapeutic treatment in mental
illness is addressed and case studies are used to illustrate
individual conditions. Controversies surrounding diagnosis,
labelling and stigma are also reviewed.
Students attending this workshop benefit from gaining
a deeper understanding of the biological basis of a range
of psychiatric disorders as well as developing a broad
knowledge of current scientific evidence relating to prognosis
and treatment of these conditions. This knowledge promotes
confidence in dealing with clients with mental illness
and provides an essential background to therapeutic work.
This is a non-examined
programme and credits are awarded for information acquired
during the course that will contribute to a Certificate
being awarded. Students will receive their certificate
at the end of the course. This one day workshop will be
held at the BST Foundations usual training venues. For
booking forms and dates, please contact the Foundation
on 020 8946 1432 for further details.
