Clinical Hypnosis in Martial
Arts & Sport
“Competition
is won or lost on the six inch playing field between the
ears.”
Bobby Jones (Legendary golfer)
‘Hypnosis and Martial Art Training: Cutting Edge Science
for Success™’.
Elite athletes use all kinds of scientific technology
to improve their performance including equipment, training
advances and nutrition. On-the-field practical training
alone is not enough to fulfil their aspirations and so
off-the-field mental development is widely considered
to be an essential part of the training regime. Those
who perform at the highest level will have mastered the
psychology of their individual sport and will have learnt
how to apply 21st century physiological and psychological
knowledge about the interaction between body and mind.
In short, the greatest of champions and athletes have
also learned to think successfully.
Goal setting and visualisation techniques are now commonplace
in many sports, and these and many other psychological
tools can be greatly enhanced with the use of hypnosis,
which actually has over 50 years of use within Olympic
Competition.
Many hypnotherapists, simply offer relaxation techniques
to sports performers. This is often not appropriate and
can be to the detriment of performance at the elite level.
This one day workshop examines some of the main areas
where sports hypnosis is of particular benefit and includes
the following:
*Demystifying hypnosis
*The mind body link
*Optimising natural arousal levels
*Eliminating distractions
*Managing emotions and learned optimisim
*Motivation for training / competition
*Unleashing self-healing
In addition the workshop will clarify that it’s not just
on-field problems that affect athletes and their performances.
Typically non-sport issues such as insomnia, stress, phobias
and traumas can all hinder an athlete’s best efforts,
issues which can equally be effectively dealt with using
hypnotherapy.
This one day workshop is beneficial to all health professionals
and therapists working with clients within a sporting
context.
This is a non-examined programme and credits are awarded
for information acquired during the course that will contribute
to the Certificate in Clinical Hypnosis for Sports Hypnosis.
Students will receive their certificate at the end of
the course. This one day workshop will be held at the
BST Foundations usual training venues. For booking forms
and dates, please contact the Foundation on 020 8946 1432
for further details.
The workshop will consist of lectures, discussions and
practical sessions.
The workshop will be presented by Gavin Emerson, Principle
Academic Director of the BST Foundation and Andy McCann
FRSM MA(Ed) PGCE BA(Hons) DCHyp AcertCSHyp GQHP SBST,
Director of Studies (Wales Region) for the BST Foundation.
Gavin has been training in martial arts for 20 years.
Having tried a number of styles including Judo, Taekwondo,
Wing Chung and boxing he focussed primarily on Kick boxing
and kung Fu, achieving a second Dan black belt in kick
boxing and fourth DNA in kung fu to date. He trains at,
and part owns, Martial Fitness Dojo in Putney www.martialfitness.com
where he is the senior kung fu Instructor.
Andy is an experienced sports coach, physical education
teacher and former international sportsman. He began his
martial arts career in 1985. Andy developed an academic
and scientific interest in the martial arts and in the
1980’s as a sports science student used tournament karate
as the basis for his dissertation at degree level. It
was well received and he went on to present my findings
at a world sports science conference. Through the following
years he gained a 4th Dan Master Grade in Tang Soo Do
Karate; had several years as an instructor at the Conflict
Training Concepts Ju Jutsu Club in South Wales; spent
time in the US where he trained with the remarkable Grandmaster
Tom Muncy, 10th Dan under whose guidance he achieved a
blackbelt in Torite Jutsu; and developed an understanding
and competence in the effective fighting principles of
WE Fairbairn and E Sykes through regular invitations from
Paul Childs and the late Peter Robins to participate in
their CODA events.
Between them, Gavin and Andy have some 45 years of martial
arts training, 50 years of combined teaching experience,
and with specific regard to hypnosis, have taught some
2000 the science of hypnosis. Many of these have included
consultant psychiatrists, doctors, healthcare professionals,
psychologists, sports psychologists and elite sports performers.
