Brief Strategic Therapy
THE INNOVATIVE BST APPROACH
In today's modern society many psychosomatic problems are
the result of various anxiety syndromes. Many patients that
undergo therapy expect it to produce improvements within a
short time. The aim of BST is to achieve a noticeable change
in the patient's problem within a maximum time parameter of
1 to 3 therapy consultations. The Foundation believes that
therapists should be equipped with a variety of therapeutic
tools that are:
- Adaptable and not limited by rigid protocols
- Tailored to each patient’s needs
- Easily learned and employed by the practitioner
RAPID TREATMENT OF ANXIETY
DISORDERS
It is now known that a strong link between mind and body
exists, and that maladapted behaviour can be learned and
maintained through neurological and physiological pathways.
Brief strategic therapeutic interventions can initiate
change
within patients by rapidly modifying these behavioural and
biological patterns. The BST approach may be used to treat a
variety of problems including: Anxiety states,
fears/phobias, sleep disorders, panic disorders, creation of
appropriate behaviour patterns, low self-esteem, neurotic
depressive illness.
BRIEF STRATEGIC THERAPY
PRACTITIONER DIPLOMA
The Brief Strategic Therapy diploma focuses upon innovative
and rapid therapeutic approaches for the treatment of
anxiety based conditions. The training programmes have been
primarily developed to equip healthcare professionals, with
the skills
required to treat patients effectively in a short space of
time.
The BST approach is based upon a tri-dimension model of
therapy. Following three main phases:
- Positive priming and psycho-education of the
patient
- Accessing and re-synthesis of state dependent memory
and learned behaviour
- Incubation and facilitation of new adaptive
behaviour within the patient’s future contextual
framework.
CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT (CPD) IN MENTAL HEALTH
Ongoing training is both a necessary and vital requirement
for all professionals who work in the field of mental health
care.
The Foundations Brief Strategic Therapy Diploma course has
subsequently gained CPD approval from a range of governing
bodies. This has allowed psychiatrists, psychologists,
psychotherapists, nurses and counsellors to use their
training to contribute towards their individual CPD
requirements.
In addition, a number of royal colleges for mental health &
higher education have validated the Foundation’s Brief
Strategic Therapy course. Mental health care professionals
should contact their own CPD organising body for
eligibility.
The skills acquired with the Brief Strategic Therapy Course
may be utilised when treating more difficult problems and
anxiety disorders. This will allow practitioners to expand
their client base. This course may also be considered an
advanced training qualification and with previous knowledge
and professional experience individuals may be considered
for supervisory positions within the Foundation. Practioners
holding the BST diploma are eligible to apply for membership
of the Society of Brief Strategic Therapists (MSBST). The
exclusive membership of this society is for health care
professionals and individuals in aligned fields.
